A Warm Welcome to Our New Board Director, Dave Blunt.

Rangelands NRM is pleased to welcome Dave Blunt to the Board as we continue to build a strong, future‑focused leadership team. Dave steps into this new governance role with a long history in the organisation and a deep understanding of the rangelands, our people and the communities we work alongside.

He joins our current Board members — Dr Wayne Gregson (Chair), John Hart (Vice Chair), Kellie Properjohn and Paul Stone — forming a capable, strategic and regionally grounded leadership group guiding Rangelands NRM into its next chapter.

Sunday (the 1st of March) marked World Seagrass Day, a chance to celebrate one of the most important and often overlooked ecosystems in our region.

Western Australia is home to some truly extraordinary seagrass systems. Shark Bay boasts the largest living seagrass meadow on Earth. It stretches for around 180 kilometres and is estimated to be up to 4,500 years old. This ancient meadow of Posidonia australis plays a globally significant role in carbon storage, biodiversity and ocean health.

Roebuck Bay, just outside Broome, is home to two seagrass species, Halophila ovalis and Halodule uninervis, that form extensive intertidal meadows. These meadows feed dugong and marine turtles - two ecologically and culturally important species. They provide habitat for fish and invertebrates and hold sediments in place, helping to keep the Bay clear and healthy.

Seagrasses trap nutrients and sediments from rainfall run-off in Broome and the wider Roebuck Bay catchment. By taking up excess nutrients, seagrass reduces the likelihood of algal blooms and supports a balanced marine ecosystem.

Rangelands NRM is proud to support Environs Kimberley in delivering twice-yearly seagrass monitoring in Roebuck Bay. These monitoring days bring trained community volunteers out onto the mudflats, building local knowledge and contributing data to the global Seagrass-Watch program. We also support workshops that help train volunteers and grow understanding of why these meadows matter.

Roebuck Bay depends on these seagrass meadows. Backing monitoring, community training, and good management is one practical way we can help keep the Bay healthy.

This project is funded jointly by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and Rangelands NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

This year is the International Year for Rangelands

This year is the International Year for Rangelands and Pastoralists.

February’s theme is about highlighting mobility and access for land managers. So, our crew thought, where’s a unique station that has utilised innovative access and mobility methods?

Introducing: Kachana Station, starring Chris Henggeler and family.

Kachana Station is arguably one of Western Australia’s most remotely accessed stations, where it’s only aircraft access to their homestead given there’s no road (although, some of the Henggeler family did walk for a week back from the Kununurra pub recently, search for the article on ABC).

In this post we talk all things access to their property, School of the Air, and their management practices using the mobility of hooved herbivores which have redefined their landscape over past decades.

Rangelands NRM is proud to highlight the incredible stories of land managers across our WA landscape, let’s get behind this wonderful region and its people in 2026!

Big things are taking off at Rangelands NRM!

Rangelands NRM and APC are expanding our drone service delivery, and we’re bringing serious altitude to our capability with high‑accuracy LiDAR now in the mix.
Precision just got a whole lot sharper across the WA Rangelands.

To get us flight‑ready, Project Officer Carson O'Dell and Chief Operations Officer Paul Buckman have completed their RePL certification and 25kg aircraft upgrade.
The team are now preparing for the arrival of the Matrice 400 and L3 LiDAR systems, unlocking:
• Greater aerial capability
• Higher‑resolution data
• More value delivered on the ground

This upgrade strengthens how we map, monitor, and support land managers with accurate, efficient, and future‑focused data.

🌿 World Wetlands Day 🌿

Today we’re celebrating some of Western Australia’s most extraordinary wetlands — Roebuck Bay and Eighty Mile Beach — both internationally recognised Ramsar wetlands of global importance.

These vast coastal systems support fauna such as migratory shorebirds, seagrass meadows and benthic invertebrates, as well as the unique ecological plant diversity and rich cultural values, playing a critical role in the health of the Kimberley coastline and beyond.

Rangelands NRM is proud to be delivering long-term Ramsar projects at both sites, working alongside Traditional Owners, community, scientists and partners to:
• protect and restore wetland ecosystems
• reduce key threats to ecological character
• strengthen monitoring, research and on-ground management
• support culturally informed, locally led stewardship

On World Wetlands Day, we’re reminded that wetlands are not wastelands, they are living systems that sustain biodiversity, culture, livelihoods and climate resilience.
