Lotterywest Environment Assets & Data Capture

Challenge

Comprehensive, accessible data on environmental assets is essential to guide conservation and management decisions across the WA rangelands, yet existing records have been fragmented, poorly documented and difficult to access. Photos, maps and environmental records are vital evidence for reporting, community storytelling and adaptive management, but limited systems and capacity have constrained their collection, storage and use.

Solution

Funded by Lotterywest, this project deploys advanced data capture technologies including remote sensing, field surveys and digital asset management to systematically inventory environmental assets across the rangelands. Data is integrated into regional databases and used to inform planning and reporting. Training is provided to local stakeholders in data collection and management, building lasting capacity for evidence-based conservation.

Impact

The project has improved understanding of regional environmental assets and enhanced decision-making for conservation investments. Evidence discovery and audit readiness have improved significantly, with faster production of fact sheets, reports and community communications. The project has also strengthened the digital skills and capacity of staff and community members involved in environmental monitoring and reporting.

Outcome

The Lotterywest Environmental Assets and Data Capture project has created a lasting digital foundation for evidence-based conservation management across the WA rangelands. By systematically capturing, integrating and sharing environmental data, the project has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of conservation planning and reporting — and built the digital capacity needed to sustain these improvements into the future.
