Activities focus on improved fire regime management to create safer mosaic burning patterns, targeted pest animal control to reduce predation pressure on threatened species, marine debris reconnaissance and clean-ups across the island network, and systematic habitat condition assessments. Work is delivered in partnership with Traditional Owners, ranger groups and conservation organisations to ensure locally-led, culturally appropriate outcomes.
The Yampi Sound Surrounds Priority Place program has established a coordinated, landscape-scale conservation response for one of Australia’s most biodiverse and ecologically significant regions. The 2024–25 project achieved concrete results through targeted aerial operations culled 560 feral cattle and 13 pigs, reducing pressure on sensitive habitats. By combining Indigenous land management, targeted on-ground action and cross-tenure partnerships, the program is creating lasting conservation outcomes for threatened species and their habitats — and building the collaborative infrastructure needed to protect this extraordinary place for future generations.
